Providence, RI - The City of Providence's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism is proud to announce the opening of A Retrofitted Perspective: AS220 Youth Documents the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Exhibit, featuring the work of AS220 Youth Photography students Raymond Cirino, Justin Hernandez, Treasure Price, Krysbel Sepulveda and instructors Scott Lapham and Miguel Rosario. Photographers interviewed and took pictures of several Green & Healthy Homes Initiative™ (GHHI) stakeholders, including homeowners, contractors, workers and energy auditors. Each student managed to capture the hard work and pride of home ownership in the City of Providence.
The exhibit is on view through July 26th. An artist reception will be held on July 24th from 5pm to 7pm.
During the exhibit, visitors will begin to understand and appreciate the work that has been done through the GHHI Providence Neighborhood Innovation Pilot, a housing intervention that served 135 low-to-moderate income single-family households in the city's Olneyville and Valley neighborhoods. AS220 Youth students documented some of the weatherization, health and safety upgrades. Also, the students documented an intensive marketing and community-based education campaign as well as minority contractor training and development.
AS220 Youth students made an audio slide show of their work to raise awareness of affordable housing. With their amazing work, GHHI's website (
www.ghhi.org), won best in class 2012 in the "Nonprofit" category and in the "Natural Environment/ Green" category from the Interactive Media Awards.
AS220 Youth is a free arts education program serving young people ages 14-21, with a special focus on those in the care and custody of the state. Their goal is to engage youth in creative work that will lead to positive social, educational, and vocational outcomes. For more information visit

GHHI maximizes the impact of public investments in housing to realize green, healthy, and safe homes in low and middle income communities. Through the GHHI model, the City aims to eliminate the confusion, frustration, fatigue, and lost opportunities that result when low-income residents are required to navigate multiple housing intervention programs. Additionally, by aligning multiple funding the City seeks to conduct deeper interventions that deliver more energy efficiency, healthier and safer outcomes for Providence families.
