City: In Memory, In Art Exhibit Now On View In Gallery @ City Hall

Providence, RI - The City of Providence's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism is pleased to announce the opening of the City: In Memory, In Art exhibit, featuring the work of eleven undergraduate student artists from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Each artist demonstrates the influence that the city of Providence has had on his or her work. Documenting the hidden beauty of industrial spaces, the majesty of downtown and other ordinary moments that compose Providence, this show captures the student experience of living in Providence. Artists include: Nicolas Baird, Alessandra Castillo, Sarah Grimm, Hana Jang, Laura Leddy, Mary Kate LoPiccolo, Bridget Sauer, Daniel Sobor, Hannah Winkler, Brenda Zhang and Dan Zhang. The exhibit is on view from March 20 to April 29, 2013. There will be a reception for the artists from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17.

For those attending Brown and RISD, there is so much activity on College Hill that students can spend four years without witnessing the flurry of creativity that takes place "off the hill." While students represent an ephemeral demographic, this selection of works demonstrates the city's influence on these students. The exhibit features a broad array of media, including traditional oil painting, digitally manipulated collage and photography. The students took inspiration from venues such as Downtown Providence, Roger Williams Park, and Smith Street, applying their unique artistic visions to this urban space.

Many of the artists cited Providence's legacy as an industrial center as an important influence. "What does Providence mean to me?" Asks Brenda Zhang. "Electricity. The power of connectedness, of quick impulses turning into networks of social change." Similarly, Mary Kate LoPiccolo's photos "capture the beauty in decay and age, embracing the city and the time that it has endured." Drawing from the rich history that Providence offers, each artist's work demonstrates that a temporary stay in a city can have a lasting impact on the psyche.

The City: In Memory, In Art exhibit is grateful for the generous support of the Brown University Department of Visual Art. A special thanks to Professors Leslie Bostrom and Leigh Tarentino for their guidance in the creation of this exhibit.
