The Providence Public Library presents a celebration of Ireland and Irish Culture on Sunday, March 10th with back-to-back music and dance programs.
Irish Dance: 2:00pm - 3:00pm
The Kelly School of Irish Dance (KSID) brings their award-winning performance of both modern and traditional Irish step dancing to Providence Public Library! Under the direction of studio owner, Meghan Kelly, the KSID dancers smile, sparkle & shine and truly love to dance & perform. The school is a proud member of The North American Irish Dance Federation.
Celebrate Ireland in Story & Song: 3:30pm - 4:30pm
A lively and authentic program embracing Irish history and culture in story and song with three well-known local musicians, Mary King, Phil Edmonds, and Dublin-bred Hughie Purcell bring Ireland to you!
Hughie Purcell has been playing music since he was 17, traveling throughout Europe and Ireland and landed in Boston in 1995. He plays acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo and sings Irish songs of history, romanticism and humor; and with the occasional recitation, Hughie brings Ireland back to us all through his charisma and music.
Phil Edmonds, a native of Killaloe, Country Clare, Ireland, and who learned to play the tin whistle in a place where he says: "The backyard was the fields." When he was 14 years old, his family emigrated to America and settled in South Providence where he still lives. Along with his tin whistle, Phil plays button accordion with great warmth and spirit.
Both of Mary King's parents are from Ireland and she was raised in that culture, taking Irish step dance lessons by age 4 and listening to her mother sing the songs of Donegal where she was born. Mary keeps the tradition of Irish music alive with the Celtic harp and her fiddle.
