The Chazan Gallery is presenting Standing Wave, an installation by Ed Osborn from September 20 - October 10. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Gallery Night Thursday September 20, 5 - 7pm.
Ed Osborn's broad explorations in sound art take the form of installation, performance, radio, video and sculpture. His installation at the Chazan Gallery, Standing Wave, consists of seven speakers held aloft by a group of arcing and swaying poles. The speakers emit complex tones which relate to their movement, creating an "undulating sound field that has a strong and tactile physical presence."
The title, Standing Wave, refers to an acoustic phenomenon that arises when sound waves move through an enclosed space; the waves create "patterns that define the space acoustically as the patterns themselves are contoured by that same space." Osborn writes, "as the movements in Standing Wave appear to oscillate between festivity and menace, it [the title] also serves as an allegory for the process and ambiguities of signaling at a distance'.
