AGON & ORCHIS, is a double-bill of groundbreaking ballets, then and now.
In 1957, George Balanchine choreographed a work unlike anything created before.
AGON, meaning contest in Greek, is a unique piece of choreography with music composed by Igor Stravinsky. The New York Times described the 1957 premiere as "ingenious and fantastically off the beaten path." To experience this work is to witness a piece of history.
ORCHIS is the newest work by renowned choreographer Viktor Plotnikov. In collaboration with talented and unique artists, Plotnikov's new work will represent a multimedia collaboration that is without equal. Rhode Island photographer A. Cemal Ekin's series of photographs of orchids inspired the ballet. World-renowned artist and RISD alum Toots Zynsky, composer Sonya Belousova, and lighting designer Alan Pickart round out the collaborative team.
