Firefly Grove: An Exhibition of Art, Dance and Photography On View In Gallery @ City Hall

Providence - City of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism invite you to visit the Gallery at City Hall for its newest exhibit Firefly Grove: An Exhibition of Art, Dance and Photography showcasing the September 2012 opening of China Blue's "Firefly Grove" the Dance of the Fireflies performed by Providence Ballet Theatre's Youth Ballet Company and photography by Jesse Banks III. The performance was part of programming for China Blue's Firefly Grove art installation at the John Brown House Museum's courtyard. The show will be on view in the Gallery at City Hall September 9th - November 15th with an opening reception on October 2nd from 5pm - 7pm.

The Rhode Island Historical Society hosted the "Firefly Grove" in the courtyard of the John Brown House Museum last year and is continuing the exhibition this year in the arbor. "Firefly Grove," presented by The Engine Institute, is a light, sound and interactive installation in the courtyard trees. The artist, China Blue, translates the firefly's rhythmic signaling pattern into sound, heard in the Firefly Chorus, and light, as seen in the blinking LEDs. The loss of fireflies due to light pollution from cities makes them a succinct metaphor for the fragility of our ecosystem.

The Engine Institute, Inc. is a RI non-profit promoting the intersection of art, science and technology.
