Kennedy Plaza

ABOUT

The Greater Kennedy Plaza Working Group is a partnership of private and public sector organizations that have come together to transform the area into a lively public square, rich with activity. On February 27, 2008, well over 100 people representing myriad constituencies participated in a workshop hosted by the City of Providence to generate ideas and identify specific opportunities for productive change in the DownCity Plaza area (which includes Kennedy Plaza, Burnside Park, the Skating Center and Biltmore Park).

That workshop and the GKP Working Group identified the kick-off goals to include a series of consistent and fun daily events.  Day-specific programs like Non-Profit Tuesdays, Market Thursdays, and Friday Farmer’s Market galvanize the objective that “there’s always something going on in Kennedy Plaza!” Our aim is to attract diverse communities to make use of what is becoming a welcome and attractive destination. This approach values pre-existing conditions and public involvement rather than dictated design. The overall vision additionally includes making the area pedestrian-friendly, full of amenities, flexibly designed, safe, and comfortable for all walks of life.

Another exciting change you will see is more seating areas to encourage pleasurable interactions and an increased use of space. Café tables and chairs instantly make the area a focal point for gathering which is integral to any successful public square. This flexible format will be accommodating to seasonal changes and programming uses while also creating a fun-looking urban center. From coffee breaks and lunchtime meetings, to afternoon reading and outdoor dining, a welcome setting is making DownCity Plaza a viable beacon of activity.

Please join us for our weekly markets and keep an eye on our calendar, chock full of fantastic events! Sign up for the Arts, Culture + Tourism email newsletter to stay in the loop. http://www.providenceri.com/ArtCultureTourism/
