Behold The Antagonist Art Movement

Opening Reception May 23, 7pm, Dead Cat Gallery, 669 Elmwood Avenue, Free Before 9pm. The Antagonist Art Movement, of New York's East Village, announced that more than 20 New York based artists will be participating in a special exhibition in Providence. RISD's Annual Graduate Thesis Exhibition

Opening Reception May 20, 6pm - 8pm, Exhibit Runs Through June 1, RI Convention Center, Free And Open To The Public. For the second consecutive year, the extraordinary work of more than 120 students receiving master's degrees from Rhode Island School of Design will be on view at the Rhode Island Convention Center in RISD's Annual Graduate Thesis Exhibition. If These Walls Could Talk: The John Brown House in Their Absence

Gallery Night Reception May 15, 6:30pm, John Brown House Museum, 52 Power Street, Free And Open To The Public. Katherine Mangiardi, a Master of Fine Arts candidate at RISD, has been working on pieces relating to both the space and history of the house. Gallery Night Reception May 15, 5pm - 9pm, Exhibit Runs Through May 30, URI Feinstein Providence Campus, 80 Wasington Street, Free And Open To The Public. The Exhibit will feature more than 300 works of art created by K-12 students from the Public Schools throughout the State in a non-juried exhibit. The works will include oil, acrylic and water color paintings, drawings, printmaking, photography, mixed media, pottery and ceramics, sculpture, collage and construction. Kevork Mourad explores themes of displacement, lost geographies, and refers to contemporary politics--especially of his native Middle East. While his palette and style have developed over the years, his paintings retain their affinity for story-telling and convey a sense of movement caught in stillness. Opera Providence Presents: Die Fledermaus

May 16 @ 8pm, May 18 @ 3pm, Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway, Tickets Are $25 - $60. Die Fledermaus is a suspenseful, tension-laden situational comedy. A year prior to the action of the operetta, Baron Gabriel von Eisenstein and his friend Dr. Falke went to a costume ball, got very drunk, and ended up in the woods on the outskirts of town. Falke fell asleep and Eisenstein left him there, to awaken in the morning and have to walk back into town still in his bat costume. Ever since, the townspeople have been calling him "Doctor Fledermaus" or "Doctor Bat", much to his irritation, and he is determined to get back at his friend. Arts Advocacy Day

May 20, 12pm- 4pm, RI Statehouse, Free And Open To The Public. The day is dedicated to recognizing the arts is an important sector in the Rhode Island economy and quality of life. Legislators need to hear from you - their constituents - that the arts are a priority. The day includes an educational workshop on how to advocate in a challenging legislative season with their guest, John Longo, Clarendon Group. Afterwards, you will meet with your legislator in meetings that you set up prior. We will celebrate together at the end of the day with remarks from key leaders in the General Assembly and the arts. Collection 2008

May 17, 7pm, VMA Arts And Cultural Center, 1 Avenue Of The Arts, Tickets Are $22 - $60. Stunning and innovative garments created by a talented group of RISD students will make their runway debut this spring in Collection 2008. The annual event showcases the best work of more than 50 up-and-coming young designers in RISD's Apparel Design department, and features the thesis collections of graduating seniors - the portfolio pieces that will earn many of them positions at top fashion houses around the world. Friday Night Concert Series At Waterplace Park

Mayor David N. Cicilline, the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Lynne McCormack, Director, and the Department of Public Parks, Robert McMahon, Superintendent, are pleased to announce this summer's Friday Night Concert Series at Waterplace Park.

This summer, six unique and dynamic musical acts will perform at Waterplace Park on June 20, June 27, July 4, July 18, July 25 and August 1. The musicians that will be performing in the Friday Night Concert Series at Waterplace Park represent some of the finest and most talented musical acts from Providence, New England and around the world.

Community MusicWorks Presents: Providence String Quartet

Manton Avenue Project Fundraiser

May 19, 6pm - 8:30pm, Pell Chafee Performance Center, 87 Empire Street, Tickets Are $100. Come one, come all to The Manton Avenue Project's circus themed benefit entitled BIGTOP! The evening will begin with a 6:00 PM cocktail hour, followed by the show at 7:00 PM, and refreshments and a chance to talk to the kids at 7:45 PM. These eight tiny circus themed plays, each with an even tinier song, will be written by project kids in conjunction with special guest writers including Donald W. The 2008 Pell Awards Gala

May 30, 7pm, Trinity Repertory Company, 201 Washington Street, Tickets Are $250 - $500. The Trinity Rep Resident Acting Company - the last company of its kind in the nation- will be honored with a National Pell Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Arts. Honorary Chairs for the event are Governor Donald L. Carcieri, Mayor David N. Cicilline and Senator and Mrs. Claiborne Pell. The twelfth annual creative black tie-event will consist of an awards ceremony in Trinity's Chace Theater, followed by a festive party in a city-block sized tent in the center of Downcity. Organizers have done away with the traditional sit-down dinner, and instead will a more free flowing evening with food and mixed drinks served at a variety of restaurant-themed bars. Joseph & Viola Marshall Memorial Benefit Concert

May 30, 7:30pm, Columbus Theatre Arts Center, 270 Broadway, Tickets Are $15 For Adults, $10 For Students And Seniors. Two of the founding members of the Flickers Arts Collaborative and the Rhode Island International Film Festival are paid tribute in this moving and entertaining multimedia celebration that showcases popular and contemporary music as interpreted by Rhode Island musicians. The program is under the musical direction of Eric R. Bronner. All proceeds will be used to build the Joseph and Viola M. Call for Applicants: Development and Communications Manager. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities seeks a highly-motivated, energetic and results-oriented individual to assist the Executive Director with the ambitious fundraising, communications, and public relations goals of the Council. This is a full-time exempt position that reports directly to the Executive Director and has great potential for growth. Would also consider splitting the position to 2 part-time roles (communications / fundraising) for the right candidate(s). The Providence Singers Auditions. May 20, 27, And June 17 By Appointment, Location TBA. Experienced choral singers in all voice parts are welcome; Bass II and other male voices are especially in demand. Audition includes a prepared solo, vocalization, ear training, and sight reading. Trinity Rep Adult General Auditions for the 2008-2009 Season. May 31 From 12pm - 7pm, June 2 From 10am - 5pm. Adult actors should prepare two contrasting monologues not to exceed three minutes total. All actors should provide a headshot/resume at the audition. This audition will serve as a general 2008-2009 season audition as well as the adult audition for A Christmas Carol. They will be looking to cast at least seven AEA roles in A Christmas Carol. Appointments are required.
