Exhibit Runs Through September 28, North Burial Ground, 5 Branch Avenue, Free And Open To The Public. The historic North Burial Ground in Providence will host a summer long art and performance project by Provincetown artist Jay Critchley. Fifteen projects from visual artists and performers from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Ontario, Canada and New York City were invited by Critchley to create original, site-specific installations and performances throughout the cemetery. July 12, 6pm, Waterplace Park, Free And Open To The Public. The evening kicks off with a performance by one of the most exciting young trumpeters in Jazz, Maurice Brown. Following suit is Jazz great Jon Hendricks, member of the legendary vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Following Jon Hendrick's performance are the best of the best local Cape Verdean artists joined by some of the scene's established and rising stars as part of the Cape Verdean All-Star's performance.
Immediately following the performance at 10pm, the Divine Providence Carnival Parade will kick off at Waterplace Park, winding its way through Providence's downcity neighborhood before ending on Westminster street. |

Mayor David N. Cicilline, the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Lynne McCormack, Director, and the Department of Public Parks, Robert F. McMahon, Superintendent, are pleased to announce the Celebrate Providence! 2008 Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative. This program brings music, dance and theatre into neighborhood parks throughout the city. All events are free and open to the public. Music, food and fun will be abundant Thursdays in July on the West Side at the beautiful Dexter Training Ground Park. In the shadow of the Cranston Street Armory, West Side Thursdays will feature four live performances on four Thursdays in July from 6 to 8 pm. These shows will complement the Parade Street Farmer's Market which will be selling fabulous fresh produce on those Thursdays from 4 to 7pm. This week's performance features the Roadshow. West Side Thursdays is a part of "Celebrate Providence!" Neighborhood Performing Arts Series and is presented and sponsored by the City of Providence, David N. 2008 MacColl Johnson Fellowship From The RI Foundation. Three $25,000 fellowships are available for emerging to mid-career music composers whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity, rigorous dedication, and significant artistic merit. Applications will be accepted for original compositions in chamber, choral, electronic, experimental, symphonic, opera, contemporary, nontraditional, and world music genres, and musical theater. Jazz composers are eligible to apply as long as a significant component of work is composed and/or consists of structured improvisation. The deadline to apply is August 1.
