Rhode Island International Film Festival

Through August 10th, Times & Locations Vary, Ticket Prices Vary. The Rhode Island International Film Festival has secured its place in the global community as the portal for the best in international independent cinema; earning the respect of domestic and foreign filmmakers, filmgoers and trend watchers. This confluence of art and commerce brings together world-class celebrities, award-winning filmmakers, new talent and audience members. Flutterby: Butterflies In Bloom

Through September 1, Roger Williams Park Zoo, 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Admission Is $3 For Adults And $2 For Children In Addition To The Regular Zoo Admission. At Flutterby, you'll wander through a picturesque greenhouse filled with hundreds of North America's most beautiful butterfly species. Just as butterflies fill the air, striking flowers and nectar plants cover the ground, an enticement to bring these "flowers in flight" even closer - perhaps even close enough to land right on you! Movies On The Block

August 7, Dusk, Corner Of Westminster Street & Union Street, Free And Open To The Public. Bring your friends and family to watch your favorite flicks on Providence's only outdoor movie screen. Every Thursday during the months of June, July, August and September movies will begin at dusk. As always, introducing the show are International shorts presented by the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Don't forget the picnic blankets and snacks! Celebrate Providence! with The Friends Of Elmhurst

The August 7 Performance Has Been Rescheduled For August 21, 6pm, Fargnoli Park, Smith Street Between April Court and Sharon Street, Free And Open To The Public. The Friends of Elmhurst will present performances by local artists in Fargnoli Park, the heart of Elmhurst. Performances will take place every Thursday at 6pm from July 17-August 21. Performers will include: Napua O Polynesia Dancers (Rescheduled For August 21); Kim Lamonthe (August 14); and The End of Summer Fête with the Big Nazo Puppets (August 21). RI Historical Society Presents: Morris Dancing Performance

August 16, 3:30pm, John Brown House Museum, 52 Power Street, Free And Open To The Public. The Rhode Island Historical Society is excited to announce a live performance by two Morris Dance teams. Morris Dancing is a form of English folk dance dating back to the late 15th century. For more information please click here.


Cryptic Providence

Exhibit Runs Through September 28, North Burial Ground, 5 Branch Avenue, Free And Open To The Public. The historic North Burial Ground in Providence will host a summer long art and performance project by Provincetown artist Jay Critchley. Fifteen projects from visual artists and performers from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Ontario, Canada and New York City were invited by Critchley to create original, site-specific installations and performances throughout the cemetery. Cultural Awakenings 2008: Sydney Burleigh

Exhibit Runs Through September 26, Bert Gallery, 540 South Water Street, Free And Open To The Public. After returning from his European studies in the 1880s, Sydney was a huge advocate for the Arts and Crafts movement, decorative arts and the intergration of fine arts and design in the Rhode Island community. Latin American Arts Exhibit

Opening Reception August 14, 4pm - 8pm, Exhibit Runs Through September 6, Gail Cahalan Gallery, 200 Allens Avenue, Free And Open To The Public. A group show of over 14 local Latin American artists working in various mediums will be on display. Nilton Cardenas, Felix Diclo, Carlos Vejarano, Tamara Diaz and more will be showing their work at this special group exhibition. For more information please click here.

Prints And Multiples

Exhibition Runs Through August 30, Gallery Z, 259 Atwells Avenue, Free And Open To The Public. This exhibit will explore the numerous processes and techniques used by printmakers that include limited edition prints, lithographs, woodcuts, etchings, engravings and serigraphs. Subject To Change: Art And Design From The 20th Century

Exhibit Is Ongoing, RISD Museum, 224 Benefit Street, Adimission Is $8 For Adults, $5 For Seniors & $3 For Students. This exhibition displays masterworks of painting, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, drawings, photographs, costume, textiles, and industrial design from 1900 to 2000, all drawn from the Museum's permanent collections. Celebrate Providence!
Neighborhood Performing Arts Series

Mayor David N. Cicilline, the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Lynne McCormack, Director, and the Department of Public Parks, Robert F. McMahon, Superintendent, are pleased to announce the Celebrate Providence! 2008 Neighborhood Performing Arts Initiative. This program brings music, dance and theatre into neighborhood parks throughout the city. All events are free and open to the public.

Providence Italian Arts & Music Festival

August 7 - 11, Various Locations Downtown, Free And Open To The Public. Non-stop live musical entertainment will run from opening until closing each day of the festival. While all the live entertainment has an Italian connection, there is a wide variety of approaches, including classical opera and arias, hard-driving swing, jazz accordion and many others. Thursday Nights Live At ALCO

Perishable Theatre's Fledgling Festival

RHD In Your Face

The Manton Avenue Project Presents: You Must Have Me Confused With Somebody Else

August 14 - 16 @ 7pm, August 17 @ 3pm, Production Workshop At Brown, 7 Orchard Avenue, Free And Open To The Public, Reservation Encouraged. Brand spankin' new creations from their Dialogue program written and acted by kid/adult duos (based on ideas conceived by the kids)! With the Dialogue Program, an adult actor and child work together to create a short play, each writing the lines for one of the two characters before acting in the play together. Savor Providence: A Benefit For Trinity Rep

One of the key new features is the addition of an interactive Gallery/Fine Art guide. RISCA Call For Art. The Rhode Island State Council On the Arts is pleased to announce a new call for public art for all visual artists at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in downtown Providence. Call To Artists For Knight Gallery Exhibition. The object of this event is to display good quality, low cost art to the public by a variety of artists. The dimensions of each entry MUST add up to 100 inches total. The deadline for entries is Auaugt 25. For more information please click here.

PPSRI Walking Tour Leaders Needed. The Providence Preservation Society is looking for individuals interested in leading walking tours for elementary and middle school students. Upon completing a 2.5 day training provided by PPS, docents are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. This year's training will take place September 23-25 and will concentrate on the College Hill and Fox Point neighborhoods. RICH Grant Information Workshop, August 8, 12pm, AS220, 115 Empire Street, Free. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICH) is transitioning from a paper grant application to an electronic one. Presenters will introduce RICH's new online grant application process and offer helpful tools and tips to potential grantees.
