Chihuly At RISD

Exhibit Runs Through January 4, RISD Museum, 20 North Main Street, Admission Is $10 For Adults & $7 For Seniors. Renowned artist Dale Chihuly [RISD MFA '68, Ceramics] has created a special site-specific installation as the inaugural exhibition for the new special exhibition gallery in the Chace Center. Chihuly at RISD will feature some 2,500 pieces of art glass created by the flamboyant godfather of the American art glass movement. For more information please click here.


Gallery Night Providence

October 16, 5pm - 9pm, Art Bus Departs From Citizens Plaza, Free And Open To The Public. A fun-filled cultural extravaganza. Flames Of Hope: A Celebration of Life At WaterFire

Flames of Hope Torch Ceremony @ 5:30pm, RI State House, WaterFire Lighting @ 6:10pm, Sponsored By The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. One of the most anticipated WaterFires of the season, this event will feature a lighting of the State House, live music, the Flames of Hope Art Gallery featuring Berge' Zobian, local radio personalities and a whole lot more. Park As Muse: Artwork Of India Point Park

Opening Reception October 10, 5pm - 7pm, Exhibit Runs Through November 28, Providence City Hall, 25 Dorrance Street, Free And Open To The Public. New Urban Arts Presents: Dear Providence

RISD Alumni + Student Art Sale

Featuring over 170 exhibitors, the work for sale ranges from wearable and functional pieces to fine art. You'll find hand-made jewelry, originally designed clothing, ceramic bowls and cups, scarves, kid's toys, blown-glass pieces, one-of-a-kind handbags, paintings and drawings, photography, sculptures and more. Community MusicWorks Free Performance

October 16, Dinner Begins @ 6pm, Performance Begins @ 7pm, West End Community Center, 109 Bucklin Street, Free And Open To The Public. Community MusicWorks presents a performance by the Providence String Quartet and Community MusicWorks students, with special guest artists, the Orion String Quartet. Knitting Nation: Phase 5

October 11, 11am - 4pm, RISD Museum, 4 South Main Street, Free And Open To The Public. The latest incarnation of Knitting Nation, produced by designer and RISD professor Liz Collins, is a combination of performance and installation. Collins' Knitting Nation will take on its fifth phase by installing 10 RISD machine knitters on the rooftop of the Chace Center. For more information please click here.

Universes: Live From The Edge

Fusing poetry, jazz riffs, hip-hop, down home blues and Spanish boleros, Universes delivers a unique theatrical experience that is reshaping American theatre. Columbus Day Feast & Festival

14th Women's Playwriting Festival

RI Chamber Music Concerts Presents: The Orion Quartet

Fundraisers For The Arts

Luminaria & Candlelight Guided Historic Tour
October 17, 6pm - 9pm, North Burial Grounds, 5 Branch Avenue, Tickets Are $5. Bring your family and friends to this Luminaria & Candlelight Guided Historic Tour and enjoy the view of 1800 candles which will light the pathway of this Historic Tour highlighting the graves of RI person's of historic distinction. Artist Opportunities

Call To Galleries And Fine Art Stores. The City of Providence's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism is in the process of revamping their web site. One of the key new features is the addition of an interactive Gallery/Fine Art guide. If you have a gallery, fine art store, art supply store, etc that is not currently listed on their web site, please click here to email Michael Christofaro with the name, location, contact info, brief description and high resolution photograph (300dpi) of your business.

RI Foundation Arts In Academics Grant. This fund supports educational projects that integrate art disciplines into other core academic subjects to benefit Rhode Island public school students. Application deadline: October 31, 2008. For more information and to download an application please click here.

Call For Entries: Letters About Literature. The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores and in cooperation with affiliate state centers for the book, invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing contest. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author explaining how that author's work changed the reader's way of thinking about the world or themselves. The deadline is December 6. Not About The Buildings Fiction Prize. The Not About The Buildings Fiction Prize will be awarded to the author of the best short story submitted to Not About The Buildings by October 15, 2008. Call For Actors. December 16 & 17, 6pm - 9pm, Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway. Rise On Broadway is pleased to announce auditions for their production of West Side Story. Those auditioning will need to prepare 2 musical pieces, 1 being from the production. Please be prepared to do a cold reading as well as a dance routine with our choreographer.
