Providence, RI - City of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism invite you to visit the Gallery at City Hall for an exhibition of photographs organized by the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Witnesses to Hunger is an exhibit of photographs by four local women - all mothers and caregivers of young children who use digital cameras to frame the issues of hunger and poverty. The exhibit will be on view through March 16, 2012.
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank supplied the four "witnesses" with cameras and asked them to document their experience of hunger and their ideas for improving the lives of low-income families with young children. The exhibit reveals that food insecurity cannot be separated from other basic needs such as housing, access to health, safety, education and opportunity. The photos give the public a chance to experience life from their perspectives.
Exhibit organizers see the Witnesses to Hunger as a way to help educate the public, policy makers and legislators about the experience of hunger and poverty while encouraging dialogue and discussion about the issues these mothers struggle with on a daily basis.
The Rhode Island project is modeled on a photographic exhibit created by the Drexel School of Public Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. The original Witnesses to Hunger project began as an extension of ongoing research in the emergency department of a children's hospital in Philadelphia in which mothers and caregivers are interviewed about their young children.
Food cans for the Nothing Campaign will be available in the City Hall gallery space so that visitors can take immediate action to donate towards the cause.
