PROVIDENCE - Mayor Angel Taveras, the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, the Hispanic Heritage Committee of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts are pleased to announce the 2011 Rhode Island Latino CommUNITY Celebration, a month of local activities that are part of the national observation of Hispanic Heritage Month which takes place September 15 through October 15.
There will be a kick-off celebration on September 15 from 5pm - 9pm at Providence Inner City Roots Cafe featuring live music, an art exhibit and much more. This event is free and open to the public.
"Our Capital City is full of rich history and cultural diversity. I am honored to represent a City where the Hispanic Community is culturally and politically prominent. Hispanic Heritage Month not only embraces but also acknowledges the direct impact the Latino community has locally and nationally." said Mayor Taveras.
Mayor Angel Taveras, the Latino CommUNITY Celebration planning team and over forty local arts and cultural organizations have partnered to showcase the art, culture and history of the state's diverse Latino community while highlighting local nonprofit organizations and small businesses.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of Hispanic Americans' contributions to the United States, their heritage and culture. September 15th marks the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
