Among so many other accomplishments, Senator Pell fought for young high school students to have the opportunity to attend college. As one of those students, in 1978 I received what was then known as a Basic Educational Opportunity Grant, now called the Pell Grant in his honor. Because of his insight and true understanding of the needs of our nation’s people, millions of Americans have received an education and have deepened the quality of our country.
The Providence City Council, on behalf of the City of Providence, extends its deepest condolences to the Pell family.
