Ward Nine Councilman Miguel Luna announced today that he is introducing two resolutions regarding the unpaid taxes owed by Garcia Enterprises, Inc.
The first resolution directs the City Solicitor to hire outside counsel to initiate collection proceedings for the $75 thousand tax bill that has been outstanding since 2006. “While a great deal of time and effort has been spent trying to determine why the money was never collected, very little has been done to actually collect it,” said Luna. “This resolution formally calls upon the Law Department to take action and ensure that the bill is paid forthwith.”
Councilman Luna is also introducing legislation asking the City’s Internal Auditor to investigate the hiring of KPMG LLP, the firm that conducted an audit of the circumstances surrounding the Garcia Enterprises’s unpaid taxes. “KMPG was paid $200 thousand of the taxpayers’ money to research this matter, yet their contract never was not approved by the Board of Contract and Supply at any time prior to or during their investigation, as required by charter. The public has a right to know whether or not the hiring process was conducted properly,” said Luna.
The resolutions will be considered Thursday, February 5th, at the 7 pm City Council meeting.
