Igliozzi Calls for ATV Restrictions

Ward Seven Councilman John J. Igliozzi announced today that he will be introducing legislation banning the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in City parks at next week’s meeting of the Providence City Council.

“The riding of ATVs on public land is both environmentally damaging and a nuisance to other people out enjoying a day in the park,” said Igliozzi. “Between the noise these vehicles create, the harm they cause to nature, and the dangerous speeds they can reach, it is in the best interest of the City to get them out of our parks.”

Currently, the Code of Ordinances only includes restrictions against using motorized vehicles on sidewalks. This amendment extends the ban to include public parks and establishes a series of fines and penalties, including community service, for violators.

“I think it’s important that those who inflict damage on our parks, or any public property for that matter, understand the full effect of their actions. That is why this amendment includes provisions that would confiscate violators’ vehicles until they have paid their fines and performed their community service, repairing the damage they caused,” said Igliozzi.

The resolution will be considered Thursday, April 16th, at the 7 pm City Council meeting.
