Councilman Terrence M. Hassett

Ward 12 - Biography






Councilman Terrence M. Hassett was elected to the City Council to represent Ward 12 in Providence in 1997 in a special election.  He was re-elected in 1998, 2002 and 2006.  Councilman Hassett has served on various council committee’s, most recently as Chairman of the Public Works Committee and the Special Study Commission on Tax Exempt Institutions.  In 2007, he was elected as City Council Majority Leader.

 

Majority Leader Hassett serves as:

 

·         Chairman, City Council Rules Committee

·         Vice-Chairman, Committee on Finance

·         Member, Committee on Ordinances

·         Member, Committee on City Property

·         Honorary Chairman, Providence St. Patrick’s Day Parade

·         Chairman, Rhode Island Coats for Kids Project

 

Majority Leader Hassett has also served as a member of the Providence Redevelopment Agency, the Capital Center Commission, and the State Transportation Advisory Committee.

 

Before his election to the City Council, Majority Leader Hassett served as a member of the Rhode Island State Board of Regents for Education, the Subcommittee for Post-Secondary Education, the Rhode Island Adult Education Commission, the Rhode Island Public Telecommunications Authority and as Chairman of the General Manager’s Search Committee at WSBE-TV Channel 36.

 

Majority Leader Hassett was also Director of Investigations of the Consumer Protection Division for the Department of Attorney General and affiliated with numerous national consumer protection associations and White Collar Crime Center.

 

A graduate of Rhode Island College, Majority Leader Hassett was conferred a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration after graduating from LaSalle Academy in 1978.  Majority Leader Hassett currently serves as a Senior Investigator in the Workers’ Compensation Fraud and Compliance Unit at the Department of Labor and Training.

 

Majority Leader Hassett represents the Mt. Pleasant and Smith Hill neighborhoods and the Capital Center District in Downtown.  He is a resident of Smith Hill.
