Providence City Council Prepares for Television Debut

Members of the Providence City Council announced today that starting with the April 17th meeting, City Council Meetings will be broadcast on local cable.

Councilman Michael Solomon, who sponsored the resolution calling for televised meetings, stressed the importance of open government. “This initiative is going to make the Council far more accessible to our constituents and it will, hopefully, increase both the public’s interest and awareness of the workings of the City.”

"It's hard for many people to get out on Thursday nights," added Council Majority Leader Terrence M. Hassett. "Televising the meetings will create a new option for those residents who wish to observe what transpires in our meetings but can’t be there in person. We have worked hard to make sure the people of Providence are able to easily stay informed with what’s going on with the Council."

Filming and video editing for the meetings will be conducted by student interns from Hope High School. “The students will receive valuable experience operating digital video and sound equipment, while also receiving a first hand lesson in civics,” said Council President Peter S. Mancini. Students were selected through a rigorous application process, and over the past two months have undergone training in videography and video editing with the help of staff from the Dunkin Donuts Center and the URI Feinstein Campus.

Council meetings will be broadcast on local Channel 18 for Cox Communications subscribers or Channel 31 for Verizon subscribers, every other Saturday, at 11:30 am.
