Councilman Leon Tejada of Ward 8 announced today that high school students, family/friends, and public officials will gather to officially dedicate the Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. located in the former Adelaide Avenue High School – Cafeteria, located on 375 Adelaide Avenue, Providence.
This newly built high school, which opened this year, is currently called the Adelaide High School and hosts over 500 students grades 9-11. The high school will be re-named the Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School. A native of Havana, Cuba he came to the United States in 1963 after receiving his Ph.D. in Mathematics and Physical Sciences from Havana University. Soon thereafter he started his teaching career in the Massachusetts and New Hampshire public school systems (1966-1979). After leaving Salem High School he became a Bilingual Math and Science Teacher for Portuguese, Chinese, African, south East Asian, and Hispanic students at Central High School (1979-1987) before being prompted the Bilingual /ESL Department Head till 1993 then Assistant Principal one year later. In addition to his great achievement, Dr. Alvarez was the former Oliver Hazard Perry Middle School Principal (1997-2000). A member of numerous state/national educational committees combined with his twenty-one years of experience in the Providence Schools system, and published material makes him an excellent recipient. The name was accepted by the Committee on Urban Redevelopment, Renewal and Planning (URRP) then approved by the City Council on Thursday, February 7, 2008 and signed/approved by the Mayor David N. Cicilline on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.
Presiding over the dedication will include speakers Mayor David N. Cicilline, Councilman Tejada, Principal Wobberson Torchon, former students of Dr. Alvarez, and teachers of the high school.
