Code Enforcement: FAQs

Constituents frequently ask the Code Enforcement Division for assistance with problems regarding their living conditions when the landlord fails to respond to their request.

Our response is to quickly and efficiently refer the constituents to the inspector assigned to that ward.

CODE ENFORCEMENT

Frequently asked questions:

I have some problems in my apartment and have talked to the landlord, but he/she has not attempted to fix the problems. What can I do?
Complaints can be filed by phone at 401-421-7740 ext. 349 or 350 or by going to the Deparment's Code Enforcement Division at 190 Dyer St. The area inspector will need to set up an appointment to inspect the apartment.
Can I get a copy of the violations on the property?
Once the Notice of Violation (NOV) has been issued, a copy can be obtained in our office located at 190 Dyer Street.
I have no water, electricity, or heat. What can I do?
Code enforcement will take a complaint and respond promptly. A violation will be issued and the case will be referred to the appropriate department (plumbing, electrical, or mechanical).
My neighbor's house is not being maintained. What can be done?
We will take a complaint and send an area inspector to the property to verify the violations and cite the property.
How long do I have to complete the work of the NOVs?
Most violations must be corrected within Thirty days, after which the inspector will re-inspect the property. Severe violations such as No Heat or Electricity must be corrected immediately.
How do I get the NOVs released?
In order for an NOV to be released, the violations must be corrected. Contact the area inspector to set up an appointment for an inspection. The area inspector will verify that the violations have been corrected, and then it will be released.
Can I get an extension if the work is not completed within the 30 days?
You must contact the inspector, have a planned course of action, and discuss the matter. We have a list of programs that can provide financial assistance to homeowners to address problems.
I have mold in my apartment. Can you send an inspector to the property?
We do not inspect or test for mold. Contact the RI Department of Health at 222-3424.
Can you tell me if a property has violations?
Code enforcement clerks can verify the existence of violations on the property. If violations exist, a property report can be provided..
