The Department of Inspections and Standards, Division of Structures and Zoning is charged with issuing zoning certificates, building and demolition permits, review and approval of plans, building inspection, the issuance of certificate of occupancy, compliance with the Building Codes as mandated by the State of Rhode Island, and issuance of notice of violation when a building is not in compliance with the Building Codes or Zoning Ordinance. The Structures division governs all repair, alteration, or addition to any public or private buildings and structures, as well as permits for new construction. The primary mission of the Structures and Zoning division is to ensure public safety and a better quality of life for the residents of the City of Providence.
