In preparation for a winter snow storm expected to leave up to 10 inches of snow in Providence, Mayor Angel Taveras has declared a citywide parking ban beginning at 6pm today, Saturday, December 29 and ending 6am tomorrow, Sunday, December 30, 2012.
Snow is forecast to arrive this afternoon and increase in intensity from 7pm until midnight, and then taper off by 3am tomorrow morning.
The Department of Public Works has prepared all equipment and personnel to respond to the storm.
Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Director Peter T. Gaynor will partially activate the city's Emergency Operations Center with PEMA staff beginning at 4pm today.
PARKING BAN
A citywide parking ban will be in effect from 6pm today until 6am tomorrow. For public safety purposes, cars in violation of the citywide parking ban will be ticketed and towed. Cars parked in school parking lots overnight will also be ticketed and towed.
SNOW REMOVAL
Motorists are advised not to double park on streets, and not to park within eight feet of fire hydrants. Blocking fire hydrants and causing any delay of fire, police and other emergency vehicles is a serious public safety hazard.
As a public safety precaution, residents and business owners are asked to clear snow and ice from obstructed fire hydrants on their streets. Every property within 500 feet of a fire hydrant is dependent on that hydrant for fire protection. Please be a good neighbor and clear it of snow.
For fire safety purposes, residents are urged not to rebury fire hydrants after they have been dug out.
By City Ordinance, businesses and residents must not place snow removed by plowing or shoveling into public roadways and sidewalks.
TRASH REMOVAL
Monday's trash removal for the City of Providence is not expected to be postponed.
