HOW TO FIND YOUR LOST PET

When a beloved pet strays from home, it can be a traumatic experience for owner and animal alike. The providence animal control center (pacc) offers these tips to help pet owners find their lost companions: contact animal agencies immediately telephone all humane societies, animal care and control agencies, and protection organizations within a large radius to file a lost-pet report.

Pets often stray farther from home than their owners believe possible. If there is no shelter in your area. Contact your local police department. Visit your localshelter every 24 hours to search. Make sure you check in every department of the shelter, including the hospital room, and a dog that might be in the cat roomdon't only phone ! Physically look. If impossible to physically look, send some one else that knows your pet.keep looking remember, many people will not immediately take alost pet to the pound, but will keep it several weeks, hoping to find the owner.

Also your lost pet may wander the streets for weeks befor being picked up. At least once a week look in as many of the surrounding shelters as possible.advertise post fliers at all public places - grocery stores, community centers, churches, etc. Place an ad in the classified section of your local paper. Offer a reward if possible. Caution: to protect yourself from pet - recovery scams, leave out one of your pet's identifying characteristics so you can verify the honesty of any caller who claims to have found your pet.notify others call your local veterinary clinics, especially those that offer boarding.

Injured pets are often taken directly to a veterinarian for care prior to transfer to an animal shelter.search the neighborhood leave the description of your pet and your name and phone number with as many people as possible. Walk and drive through the neighborhood several times every day. The earlymorning hours and sunset are prime times for finding lost pets. Question neighbors, jogers, postal carriers, garbage collectors, and newspaper carriers and ask them to keep an eye out for your pet. ... Don't think that because your pet is a purebred that it has been stolen. The pounds are full of purebreds that are waiting fot their owners to pick them up.use the power scent place a recently - worn article of clothing in your yard; for cats who usually stay indoors, place their litter box outside. Familiar scents can bring them home.remember : an officer might not recognize your pet from a telephone description. Go in person and look for yourself every 3 or 4 days !( And bring a photo if you have one ) don't give up! Keep searching even when you have little hope left.

Animals who have been lost for months have reunited with their owners.and next time protect your pet from getting lost again. Always keep a collar and identification tag on your pet. An id tag is a lost pet's ticket home. Ask your local animal care and control agency if permanent methods of pet identification, such as tattoos or microchips, are available in your area. License your pet as local law requires. Other important steps include keeping your pets supervised at all times and having them spayed or neutered.

Finally, keep a photo of your pet on file in the event he or she strays again.
