Early Town Council Record Book Restored

Thanks to a generous gift from the Rhode Island Genealogical Society, the tattered and worn Town Council Meeting Book Number 4 underwent a dramatic refurbishment and has been preserved for future generations of researchers.

Professional bookbinder Ruth Strach, owner of the At Last Studio in Scituate, took great care in re-sewing the book's signatures, repairing torn pages with Japanese tissue, adding new acid-free endpapers, and rebinding the volume in a German Cathedral Calf leather. The result is remarkable.

This particular volume contains hand written minutes of Town Council meetings covering the period from 1743 to 1774. Paul Campbell, City Archivist, hopes to preserve other volumes in the series. The first volume includes records dating back to 1692.
