Owner-Occupied Homestead Tax Exemption Reapplication Deadline Extended to April 6

Legislation passed last year requires all Providence homeowners to reapply for the owner-occupied homestead tax credit. The new ordinance requires homeowners to register their vehicle at the address on the homestead exemption application.

To qualify, homeowners must complete an application and provide a copy of the vehicle registration AND one of the following:

• a Rhode Island driver's license OR
• a homeowners insurance policy OR
• an automobile insurance policy

The new homestead exemption procedures will protect homeowners who live in Providence from subsidizing the exemption for those who own a home here, but live somewhere else.
