Lobbyist Registration Deadline Moved to July 1st

Friday, May 13, 2011

The deadline for lobbyists to file with the City Clerk in accordance with the recently passed Lobbyist Registration ordinance has been moved from May 16th to July 1st to allow time for the Council to consider some minor changes.

"Originally, we planned for this ordinance to take effect this month but, as we are discussing some wording changes, we felt it was only fair to hold off until everything is finalized," said Council President Michael A. Solomon. "The Council is committed to making Providence government more accessible to the people who live and work here. I am very proud of the action the Council has taken on this ordinance."

Approved in April, this precedent setting ordinance establishes a registration process for individuals and entities who lobby city officials and requires that lobbyists file reports and wear identification badges.

"Never before has Providence had these types of checks and balances to ensure accountability," said Ward 7 Councilman John J. Igliozzi. "I believe the public has a right to know and the City has a duty to provide information regarding the people and groups who seek to influence municipal decisions regarding contracts, legislation, policies, and other city business."
