The Providence School Department
The School Department oversees the operation all Providence Public Schools, however, control of the public school system is vested in a school board
consisting of nine members. These are appointed by the Mayor with the approval
of the City Council. The school system comprises thirty-six schools: six
senior high schools, one vocational school, one alternative high school,
six middle schools, twenty-two elementary schools and one special education
center. Approximately 24,000 students are currently enrolled in the Providence
School System. Of that total 40 % are Latino, 25 % White, 23 % African
American, 11 % Asian and slightly less than 1 % Native American. Sixty-four
languages are currently represented in Providence's school age population.
This department also answers questions about the city schools in general.
However, specific questions or problems concerning a school should be directed
at that specific school.
