Many women are hesitant to embark on a career in the fire service because they are not sure what to expect. Women have served the Providence Fire Department alongside their male counterparts since 1991 and continue to serve in the ranks from Firefighter to Rescue Captain. Our standards are high but attainable.

I am not a big woman, can I physically do the job?
Emergency work is physically demanding but overall fitness not brute strength is required. All firefighters benefit from a strength, stretching and cardiovascular exercise program to prepare for the demands of emergency work. We have performing members of our Department whom are as small as 5 feet tall.

What is it like to work with male firefighters?
The Providence Fire Department trains all members about the issues of harassment and enforces strict policies of anti-harassment and anti-discrimination. With that being said, The Providence Fire Department is made up of a diverse group of males and females with a wide array of personalities and backgrounds. As in any job you will like some co-workers more than others but everyone is expected to treat each other professionally. Most females find the work environment provides more opportunity to make friends rather than foes.

How do I balance family life with a career in the fire service?
Being a Mom and a Firefighter/EMT is a unique combination. Our schedule of 2 days on 2 nights and 4 days off allows mother's to be home during most days and provide for their family.

What if I know nothing of the Fire Service?
Providence does not require an EMT license to apply. We provide and pay for all new recruits training. You will need to pass all certification tests as a condition of employment. The Providence Fire Department will provide that you have the skills and knowledge necessary to perform job tasks and you will receive pay and medical benefits while attending the Providence Fire Academy.

What is the opportunity for advancement?
The Providence Fire Department promotions for the rank and file are based on competitive written testing. All members are eligible after 5 years of service to take promotional exams. Currently, females have been promoted to the ranks of fire, rescue, fire prevention and dispatch lieutenant, as well as, Rescue Captain.
