Arson Prevention and Investigation Unit

The Providence Fire Prevention Bureau is home to the Arson Prevention and Investigation Unit. This Arson Unit operates out of the Fire Prevention Bureau at the Providence Public Safety Complex located at 325 Washington Street on the 3^rd floor.

The Arson Unit consists of four fire investigators and two arson investigators. The four fire investigators operate one on each working shift. They are the initial on scene investigators.

These Fire Investigators work together with the Arson Investigators to:

• determine the cause and origin of a fire
• investigate complaints
• conduct building surveys
• survey night clubs for overcrowding

The two arson investigators normal work hours are Monday through Friday. They also respond to any fire that appears to be suspicious or where there is an injury due to the fire. The Arson Investigators work hand-in-hand with the Police Department and the Attorney General's office to prosecute those responsible.

The Arson Prevention and Investigation Unit also assists fire victims seeking relief by providing:

• fire reports
• assistance letters to the American Red Cross
• assistance letters to the Providence Community Action Program (PROCAP)
• insurance companies
• information to fire victims on what to do after a fire in the home

*Proper identification must be provided before receiving any reports or forms from the Arson Prevention and Investigation Unit.
