Fairmount Avenue Fire

Providence, RI - On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at approximately 3:30 AM, the Providence Fire Department responded to a house fire at 85 Fairmount Avenue. All occupants made it out of the burning building safely because smoke detectors in one of the apartments sounded, alerting the occupant who was asleep at the time. This first floor occupant then alerted his neighbors on the other floors.

The smoke detectors on other floors had batteries removed so they did not sound. The Providence Fire Prevention Bureau would like to stress the importance of making sure every smoke detector in a home is working and has a fresh battery installed. The people in this building made it out alive today because one of the occupants had working smoke detectors. It is recommended that you replace the batteries at least once a year.

If you are a Providence resident living in a one, two or three family house, and do not have smoke detectors, please call the Providence Fire Prevention Smoke Detector Hotline at 401-243-6034 and they will provide you with a smoke detector.
