Firefighters wearing, selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation

PROVIDENCE, RI- In a ceremony today in front of the Providence Fire Department's headquarters, Mayor Angel Taveras, Providence Firefighters Local 799 Union President Paul Doughty and members of the Fire Department donned t-shirts designed to raise funds and awareness during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The members of the Fire Department will wear and sell the t-shirts while on duty until the end of October.

"Many of us have been personally impacted by breast cancer," said President Doughty. "This is a great way to honor breast cancer survivors and help bring awareness to a worthy cause."

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

The Providence Fire Department's Local 799 has been involved in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month effort for the past four years. Each year, the Department creates a different t-shirt design. This year, shirts are blue with pink letters. Proceeds from shirt sales will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

T-shirts cost $20, and a limited quantity is being sold at the Providence Firefighters Hall at 92 Printery Street in Providence. For more information, please call (401)272-1570.

Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

Since 1982, Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer - transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.

"It's a privilege to join with the members of the Providence Fire Department to help raise money and awareness about breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I commend Providence's firefighters for doing their part in the fight against this disease, and I encourage everyone to buy a t-shirt," said Mayor Taveras.
