David N. Cicilline, Mayor
2008 Program Description:
The Fellowship Program is a full-time, 11-week summer program that runs from June 9th till August 22rd with a 1 week vacation included. Each of the 10 Fellows will work with the head of a Department, delving into a particular issue of city government and then completing a related research project as a culmination of their efforts. Participating students will see how the City functions on a daily basis, as well as learn how long-term goals and policies are constructed. Fellows receive a stipend of $2,000.00 at the end of the summer as recognition of their hard work.
In previous years, students have worked in city departments ranging from Policy and Communications to Neighborhood Services and Planning. In their position as Fellows, students have the opportunity to write policy memos, work in coordination with other branches of the city’s administration, and assist department heads in their daily efforts. Participants also have the chance to work directly with the Mayor and see how Providence’s chief executive handles the needs of the city. In total, the Fellowship program allows students to acquire an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the city and develop their own leadership, organization, and management skills.
To apply students must:
- Have complete at least four semesters of college
- Complete an application, essay and interview
- Submit 2-3 letters of recommendation, resume and a college transcript
