Office of Neighborhood Services
This department deals with the realities of city government and how it interacts with the day-to-day reality of constituent services. This is a hands-on office that requires good people skills and a high degree of responsibility.
Policy Office
This office deals with research, and development of policies and legislation that impacts the people of The City of Providence. Students in this office gain an in-depth knowledge of particular social issues and challenges facing the City.
Providence Public Schools Communications Office
This department is ideal for students with an interest in education policy, as well as strong written communication skills. Interns learn about the administration of public schools through research and drafting press releases.
Planning Department
There are many opportunities within the Planning Department. Issues such as housing and community development, zoning ordinances, neighborhood planning, and special projects are managed in this office and require students who are deeply interested in urban development.
Law Department
Interns get first-hand legal experience in this very demanding department. Research skills and a strong interest in the law are prerequisites. A substantial time commitment will result in an intern experience that is beneficial to both parties.
Tax Assessors Office
Mature, independent, hard working, courageous people are needed to deal with the public regarding taxation. Individuals must rise to the challenge in meeting the concerns of the taxpayer. Interns here must have a good business mind, be patient, courteous and have a thorough understanding of taxation.
Mayoral Advance Team
This department deals with the logistics of the Mayor’s day to day business and schedule. Students here see what goes in to the Mayor’s work and how to handle public events.
Providence Emergency Management Agency & Office of Homeland Security
This new department could use a lot of people to help with policy and programs that have been mandated by the Federal Government. There is a lot of organizational work to be done but this also provides an interesting look at what it takes to establish a new city agency.
