Who can use a temporary permit? The Traffic Enforcement Division of the Providence Police issues parking permits for vehicles on city streets when engaged in construction, maintenance or refurbishment of nearby property.
The permit does not exempt the holder from all parking tickets. Properly issued and displayed parking permits allow vehicles to remain parked regardless of meter charges or time restrictions. A vehicle displaying a legal permit will not be ticketed for parking violations, as long as the vehicle does not violate the following traffic infractions: parking during an emergency, parking to obstruct the flow of traffic, parking within 8 feet of a fire hydrant, parking within 25 feet of a corner, blocking a driveway, parking in a marked bus stop, angle parking, parking in marked crosswalk or within an intersection. These types of violations will be ticketed.
How to apply:
Fax and internet: Download the permit application and fax the completed application one working day in advance to Traffic Enforcement at 401-243-6435.
In person or by phone: Pick up an application at the Traffic Enforcement Office in the Public Safety Building, 325 Washington Street, or call 243-6419 and we will fax you a copy. Deliver the completed application or fax it to 401-243-6435. Allow one working day for processing.
No matter how you apply, you must pick up the permit in person! Once the permit is issued, it must be displayed in the vehicle during the permit period.
Providence Police may deny some permit applications. Permits will not be granted for vehicles that have current traffic violations or costs due to the Municipal Court. Permits are granted within the discretion of Traffic Enforcement in order to prevent excessive congestion and to maintain safety and welfare.
How much will it cost? Permit parking fees are $10 per day per vehicle. All payment is due at the time of application. Payment is by check or money order only. No cash or credit cards are accepted.
