17 Providence Schools Receive USDA's Healthier U.S. School Challenge (HUSSC) Awards

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Supt. Susan Lusi and Northeast Regional Administrator of the USDA announce awards at February 4 ceremony at Anthony Carnevale Elementary School
Seventeen Rhode Island schools, all in Providence, have been awarded a Bronze certification in the Healthier U.S. School Challenge (HUSSC) Awards and are among just five percent of schools throughout the United States to receive recognition at this time for their outstanding nutrition, health and wellness programs.
To acknowledge their achievement, the bronze-winning schools will each receive a plaque, a banner to display and a monetary incentive award of $500. The winning schools were announced by James Arena-DeRosa, Northeast Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, at a ceremony at Anthony Carnevale Elementary School on Monday, February 4 at 10 a.m.
Also present to congratulate the winning schools were Mayor Angel Taveras, Superintendent Susan Lusi and Amber Clark, Miss Black Rhode Island 2013, a medical student at Brown University, whose platform involves eliminating health disparities among minorities.
"I am very proud to support and recognize all of the ongoing efforts in our schools to serve our students nutritious and healthful meals and provide them with high quality physical education and other recreational opportunities," said Mayor Taveras. "We are making healthier schools that produce healthier and stronger students."
