Organizing for Action, the national grassroots organization formed to support President Obama's second-term agenda, today is sponsoring a Gun Violence Day of Action to highlight a number of common-sense gun reform measures.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, an advocate for reducing gun violence and a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, released the following statement in conjunction with the Day of Action:
"As the national debate continues about how best to curb gun violence while protecting our Second Amendment rights, I believe it is important to focus on common-sense reforms. We must enhance our universal background check system by closing loopholes for sales at gun shows and on the Internet.
I commend our federal delegation for their strong support of universal background checks. Senator Reed, Senator Whitehouse, Congressman Cicilline and Congressman Langevin have long been advocates for measures to reduce gun violence, I urge Congress to close these loopholes now, and to continue working to find consensus on other sensible and reasonable gun reform legislation."
