
Post offers opportunity to shape future of Providence Schools; application deadline is November 9.
The Providence School Board Nominating Commission is accepting applications for three positions on the School Board which have terms expiring on December 31, 2012. Candidates with strong finance and/or policy experience are particularly encouraged to apply.
"The School Board plays a vital and direct role in our efforts to accelerate student achievement and transform the Providence Public Schools into the best urban school district in America," said Mayor Taveras.
School Board members are appointed to three-year terms, which are staggered to have three positions up for renewal every year. School Board members whose terms are expiring have the possibility of reappointment to subsequent three-year terms.
The School Board Nominating Commission will conduct an information session on Thursday, November 1 for interested parties to learn about the roles and responsibilities of School Board members and the School Board nomination process. The meeting will be held 6-7:15 p.m. at the Providence Public School Department at 797 Westminster Street, in School Board Room B on the third floor.
The School Board application deadline has been extended to 4PM on Friday, November 9, 2012. Applications can be completed online, and the School Board job description and other information is available at the city's website: https://www.providenceri.com/schools/nominating-commission-application/
The city is sending letters reaching out to community groups in Providence to encourage individuals to apply.
Applicants whose applications meet the general qualifications for School Board candidacy will be invited to appear at a public forum on Wednesday, November 14 for interested community members to meet and ask questions of candidates. The forum will be held 6-8 p.m. at the Providence Public School Department, 797 Westminster Street, School Board Rooms B, 3rd floor.
At the conclusion of the application process, Mayor Taveras will select nominees from a pool of finalists recommended by the Nominating Commission
