Speaking at commencement ceremonies this graduation season, Mayor Angel Taveras called on local college graduates to see opportunity in challenge and commended them for contributing to the cultural and economic vitality of Rhode Island's capital city.
"You are graduating during a challenging time. But you must remember that the greatest opportunities are born during the most trying times," said Mayor Taveras. "Take the time, especially at the beginning of your career, to explore and refine your outside interests. Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone."
Mayor Taveras delivered remarks at the commencement ceremony of Johnson & Wales University's Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School on May 17; Rhode Island College on May 19; and Providence College on May 20. The Mayor will also attend Brown University's commencement ceremony on May 26.
He told the local graduates that they have left their mark on Providence, and asked them to consider staying in Providence to begin their careers and continue contributing to the Providence's cultural and economic vitality.
"We need smart, young, creative people to help us grow our economy," Mayor Taveras said. "We are doing exciting things to create new opportunities and support New Economy jobs in every part of our city. So please, consider staying here and making Providence your home. We'd be glad to have you."
