City of Providence Observes Workplace Safety Month

Thursday, June 9, 2011

City and Local 1033 gear up for series of certified training programs.

The City of Providence will observe June is Workplace Safety Month with a series of certified training programs certified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

"Workplace safety is a priority for my administration, and education is the best way to prevent job-related injuries These important trainings provides the City's workers with the information and skills they need to stay safe on the job," said Mayor Taveras.

Throughout the month of June, workplace safety training will be offered to Local Union 1033 members and non-union supervisors. Trainings will include sessions on work zone safety, working in confined spaces (i.e., sewer), trenching and shoring, injury prevention for those who do outdoor work, first aid and CPR, among other topics. Training sessions combine classroom and fieldwork exercises.

"By working together and providing our Sisters and Brothers with training and information needed, we can reduce injuries and keep members safe and on the job. This is more than a legal obligation; this program demonstrates our Union's and the City's moral commitment to those who serve our City. We are very glad to partner with the City of Providence and the Taveras administration on this important issue," said Donald Iannazzi, business manager for Public Employees Local 1033.

The trainings are funded through the Rhode Island Public Employees' Training Fund, which was established to provide career enhancement, educational and professional development, and safety training for public servants. The fund is generated through employee contribution.

In addition to safety training, the fund also supports a variety of other professional development opportunities for public servants.
