The Providence School Board Nominating Commission has begun accepting applications to fill one newly vacant seat on the School Board. The selected candidate will complete the term of this position, which expires on December 31, 2012, with the possibility of reappointment to subsequent three-year terms.
"The School Board plays an enormously important role in shaping the future of public education in Providence by providing leadership and decision-making that broadly impacts the everyday experience of our students. In times of fiscal emergency like we face now, the School Board is a lead partner in our efforts to accelerate student achievement and give all students the education they need and deserve. Becoming a member of the School Board is one of the most direct ways that a Providence resident can get involved and join the fight to transform our schools," said Mayor Taveras.
The School Board application deadline is 4PM on Thursday, July 21, 2011. The application can be accessed and downloaded online here at the City's website, www.providenceri.com.
If not accessed electronically, applications can be picked up and returned to the Office of Neighborhood Services, on the 2nd floor of Providence City Hall. Applications can also be picked up in the Central Office of the Providence Public School Department, located on the 3rd Floor, 797 Westminster Street. The City is also sending letters reaching out to community groups throughout the City to encourage individuals to apply.
At the conclusion of the application process, Mayor Taveras will select a nominee from a pool of finalists recommended by the Nominating Commission. The new School Board nominee will be subject to City Council approval.
