Mayor Angel Taveras was honored this week by the Latino Leaders Network (LLN)'s Tribute to Mayors dinner in Washington, D.C. Mayor Annise Parker of Houston, Texas was also honored at the event.
The Latino Leaders Network convenes mayors at the US Conference of Mayors winter and summer meetings to honor mayors who are bringing their communities together.
Consistent with a policy adopted since he took office, Mayor Taveras' campaign is paying for all expenses related to the trip; no taxpayer funds are being used.
State Senator Juan Pichardo introduced Mayor Taveras at the event. Other guests and speakers included Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, CA; Mayor Vincent Gray of Washington, D.C., and state Representative Carol Alvarado of Texas.
"I'm humbled and honored to receive the Latino Leaders Network Tribute to Mayors Award," said Mayor Taveras. "We mayors have the best job in the country, and we are privileged to provide leadership to our cities and on the front lines of many of our nation's biggest challenges. I look forward to working with the Latino Leaders Network and the US Conference of Mayors in the months and years to come, as we lead our cities and our nation towards a bright future."
An attorney and former Providence Housing Court Judge, Mayor Angel Taveras was elected as the city's first Latino mayor with 82 percent of the vote in November 2010. Mayor Taveras is also the third elected and fourth serving Dominican-American mayor in the United States. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to public service.
"The Latino Leaders Network is honored to host this annual Tribute to Mayors dinner to recognize mayors who are helping to unite diverse communities by including their Latino residents," noted Mickey Ibarra, Founder and Chairman of LLN. "We are pleased to honor two mayors whose leadership has inspired their communities to find a common voice on issues of importance to all Americans."
