Make No Little Plans: A Symposium on Visions for the City of Providence

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Providence Preservation Society to host three-day event September 15-17.

The Providence Preservation Society is hosting a three-day event from September 15-17 exploring lessons learned from the creation of Providence's Capital Center on its 30th anniversary, with a look ahead at the opportunities opened by the removal of I-195 and creation of the Knowledge District.

The event kicks off on Thursday, September 15 with a free special film screening of "Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham and the American City" at the Michael P. Metcalf Auditorium of RISD Museum's Chace Center at 20 North Main Street. Daniel Burham, generally acknowledged as the father of Urban Planning, launched the City Beautiful movement in the 19th century. The film is co-presented by the RISD Museum and starts at 6PM.

From September 16-17, panel discussions will take place at the City of Providence Department of Planning and Development at 444 Westminster Street. The symposium will feature keynote speaker Francis J. Leazes, Jr., author of "The Renaissance City." Tours of the capital center and Jewelry District will also take place starting at 2PM on Saturday, September 17. The symposium ends with a gala on September 17, "An Evening in Monte Carlo," at the GTECH Center at 10 Memorial Boulevard. For a complete schedule and tickets, go to http://providencesymposium.com/.
