Mayor Angel Taveras joined with Parks & Recreation Superintendent Bob McMahon, Councilman David Salvatore and Councilman Nicholas Narducci on May 22 to celebrate a $20,000 recreational grant from Coca-Cola Company to refurbish the basketball courts at Corliss Park.
The grant was made possible through the Sprite Spark Parks project, a program that is refreshing basketball courts in public parks and recreation centers throughout the nation. Joseph Maggiacomo, Coca-Cola's local merchandising sales manager, presented the check at the celebration, which took place at the Wanskuck Boys and Girls Club in Providence.
"Especially when school lets out, it is so important for young people to have functional basketball courts, baseball fields and other recreation facilities so they can stay active, healthy and safe through the summer," said Mayor Taveras. "Public-private partnerships are crucial to building strong and healthy communities, and Coca-Cola has been an important part of Providence's business community for many years - employing our residents, contributing to the local economy and now giving back to our city with this generous Sprite Spark Parks Project investment."
