Four Providence high school basketball teams are competing this weekend in the state basketball championships.
The Hope High School and Central High School boys will respectively take on LaSalle and Rogers on Friday night at the Ryan Center for the right to play in Saturday's state championship game. The Classical High School girls will face Narragansett High School for the Division 2 championship on Saturday and the Juanita Sanchez High School girls basketball team will faceoff against Middletown High School for the Division 3 championship.
"I am so proud of all of our student athletes and wish all of our teams well this weekend. I'll of course be pulling especially hard for the girls from Classical High School," said Mayor Taveras. "Sports are an important part of growing up and provide students with important lessons in teamwork and leadership."
Mayor Taveras attended Providence public schools and graduated from Classical High School. Central High School defeated Classical last weekend during the quarter finals of the boys state championship tournament.
