Mayor Taveras Joins Federal Hill Merchants, Residents to Honor City’s Rich Italian History on Columbus Day

Monday, October 10, 2011

Mural depicting Italian community leaders rededicated.

On Columbus Day weekend, Mayor Angel Taveras joined merchants and residents of Federal Hill to rededicate a mural welcoming visitors coming to Providence from Routes 6 and 10 and onto historic Atwells Avenue. The newly-repainted Federal Hill Gateway Mural depicts the rich heritage of Providence's Italian community and includes portraits of longtime community and business leaders Frank R. Bennell, Sr., Judge Frank Caprio, Arthur E. Coia, Joseph DiGiglio, Joseph Marzilli and Carlo Merola.

"This mural will inspire visitors to learn the stories behind these individuals who made important contributions to our City," said Mayor Taveras. "I thank the families of these leaders and all Federal Hill merchants and residents for bringing this inspiring piece of history back to life."

Mark Gasbarro, the vice-president of the Federal Hill Commerce Association, and Judge Frank Caprio, representing families of the mural, also spoke at the rededication.
