Mayor Taveras Nominates Natalia Rosa-Sosa to School Board

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Mayor Angel Taveras has nominated Natalia Rosa-Sosa to serve on the Providence School Board. The nomination was submitted to the City Council for consideration this week.

Rosa-Sosa, who recently served as a program associate for Global Partnership Schools and a research assistant at the Roger Williams University Latino Policy Institute, is a dedicated community servant and education advocate. She also helped produce a weekly educational radio program for Latino Public Radio, and attended several conferences in Washington while working on the White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics.

"The School Board plays an important role in shaping the future of public education in Providence. Becoming a member of the School Board is one of the most direct ways that a Providence resident can get involved and join in the efforts of transforming our schools. I am confident that Natalia will serve our children well," said Mayor Taveras.

Rosa-Sosa is a product of the Providence Public School system. She attended Mary E. Fogarty and Martin Luther King Elementary, Nathan Bishop Middle School, and Hope High School before entering the University of Rhode Island, where she is currently finishing a B.A. in English and economics.

"I believe all children in the city of Providence deserve and should receive a first class education. It is an honor to be nominated for the Providence school board by Mayor Taveras. As a school board member, I will work diligently to ensure that our children's education is a priority, where stakeholders can work together to enhance the quality of their education." said Rosa-Sosa.

The Nominating Commission received nine applications and interviewed four finalists before recommending Sosa to Mayor Taveras. Rosa-Sosa has accepted the Mayor's nomination to join the Providence School Board.

The City Council has 30 days to consider and act upon Rosa-Sosa's nomination. If approved by the City Council, Rosa-Sosa will complete the current term of the vacant seat, which expires on December 31, 2013.
