Mayor Taveras Proclaims June 11, 2012 Joseph A. Doorley, Jr. Day in the City of Providence

Monday, June 11, 2012

WHEREAS, the City of Providence, on this day, dedicates its Municipal Building at 444 Westminster Street in honor of Joseph A. Doorley, Jr., Mayor of Providence from 1965 to 1975, the dedication being a gesture of gratitude and respect for a municipal leader who served his city with distinction; and


WHEREAS, born in Providence in 1930 to Joseph, Sr., a firefighter, and Nora (Cannon) Doorley, the future mayor graduated from LaSalle Academy and went on to Notre Dame, where he received his undergraduate degree cum laude in 1953, his solid academic training later strengthening a teaching career at his high school alma mater, soon to be eclipsed by the lure of politics and public service after he obtained a law degree from Boston College in 1958; and

WHEREAS, elected to the Providence mayoralty in 1964 after seasoning on the Democratic City Committee, as a gubernatorial assistant, and on the Providence City Council, Joe Doorley imposed a unique and progressive stamp upon public service, generating urban renewal, hospital construction, the building of the Civic Center and improvements in Providence's business climate, crafting a legacy as a devoted public servant who loved his city and was key to the extensive modernization and revitalization that occurred under his watch; and


WHEREAS, the residents of Providence take great pride in the life and achievements of Joseph A. Doorley, Jr., and celebrate the dedication, on this day, of an important municipal building in his name, expressing our thanks to a dynamic figure who wrought positive and enduring change in the Capital City, preparing Providence for the challenges that lay ahead;
