
WHEREAS, the City of Providence on this day partners with the Peace Flag Project in observing September as
the Month of Peace in Providence, an event that commences with a Peace Walk in conjunction with WaterFire Providence and invites clerical and governmental leaders, community organizations and the general public to demonstrate a commitment to peace, locally and globally; and
WHEREAS, in 1981 the United Nations proclaimed an International Day of Peace to be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples," the issue and idea of peace embracing humanity's deepest hopes and remaining its guiding inspiration and most enduring goal; and
WHEREAS, the Month of Peace is strengthened by the participation of local organizations such as the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, Rhode Island for Community & Justice, Children First, URI's Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies and many others, expanding awareness of this special monthlong celebration; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Providence join me, Ms. Ginny Fox of the Peace Flag Project and countless advocates
of peace at home and abroad in highlighting the Month of Peace in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace, urging all citizens to be part of a noble initiative and to work, in whatever individual capacity they can, toward converting humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into practical reality for future generations;
