Mayor Taveras Spends Afternoon Completing Training Course with Local Firefighters

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

The International Association of Firefighters in conjunction with Local 799 IAFF and Netroots Nation held a one day fire ground operations course this afternoon.

Mayor Taveras participated in the training at the Windmill Street School alongside other community leaders and representatives from the Netroots Nation conference.

The agenda for the day simulated a training session for a Providence firefighter. Participants donned full protective clothing to complete a variety of intensive drill exercises including subduing live fires, climbing aerial ladders, and completing trauma patient operations.

"We should remember the firefighters, EMTs and first responders across Providence and across the country who wake up every morning willing to put their lives on the line for people they've never met," said Angel Taveras. "This training course has demonstrated how tremendously challenging the jobs of our firefighters are. I am eternally grateful for the work our first respondents do."

The training course served as both the launch of the Netroots Nation conference and a reminder of the important bond between community leadership and the agents of public safety.
