
Thomas F. Oates III promoted to deputy chief;Mayor Angel Taveras today swore in the Providence Police Department's new deputy chief and majors in charge of the investigative and patrol divisions.
Public Safety Commissioner Steven M. Paré, and Chief Hugh T. Clements, Jr. today announced on March 30 the promotions of Major Thomas F. Oates III to Deputy Chief of Police, Captain Keith J. Tucker to Major of the Investigative Division, and Captain Thomas Verdi to Major of the Patrol Division.
"I congratulate Thomas Oates, Keith Tucker, and Thomas Verdi. Ensuring the safety and security of the residents of our city remains one of my highest priorities as Mayor. These officers will play vital roles in assisting Chief Clements in maintaining the highest standard of public safety and accountability to the citizens of Providence," said Mayor Taveras.
"These officers are proven leaders and have earned the respect of the men and women of this Department and its law enforcement and community partners. These positions are necessary for us to accomplish our mission of reducing crime, reducing fear and disorder, and maintaining the quality of life of those who live, work, and visit our great city. I thank Mayor Taveras and Commissioner Paré for allowing me to make these promotions as we continue to move the Department forward," said Chief Hugh T. Clements, Jr.
"During these difficult economic times, it is critical that we promote these proven law enforcement professionals to these key leadership positions as we build on our nationally recognized community policing model and move the Department toward national accreditation. I commend Major Oates, Captain Tucker and Captain Verdi for their willingness to serve," said Public Safety Commissioner Paré.
Major Oates is a 31-year veteran of the Providence Police Department and the recipient of more than 25 commendations for outstanding police work. He has worked in leadership positions in the Investigative, Administrative, and Patrol Divisions.
Captain Tucker is also a 31-year veteran of the Department and has extensive experience in the areas of internal affairs, Homeland Security, youth services, investigations, strategic planning and policy development. He is also the recipient of numerous commendations and awards for outstanding police work.
Captain Verdi is a 25-year veteran of the Department. He played key roles in the multi-jurisdictional investigation of the notorious Latin King Gang and Operation Crackdown which lead to the arrest of more than 100 individuals for the illegal distribution of crack cocaine, cocaine, and heroin. Captain Verdi has received numerous awards and commendations and is the first member of the Providence Police Department to be appointed to the Rhode Island Parole Board.
